ZURICH, Switzerland — ABB has won an order from Brazilian electric power distributor Light Serviços de Eletricidade to provide a protection and control system for Frei Caneca, its most important substation. The system will help to optimize the operation of the substation and enhance power reliability and stability.
Electricity demand in Brazil has increased steadily over the past decade, spurred by urbanization and major sporting events like the recent 2014 football World Cup and the approaching 2016 Olympic Games. The government has been increasing power capacity and enhancing its transmission and distribution infrastructure.
Built in 1907, the Frei Caneca substation supplies power to a population of about two million in downtown Rio de Janeiro and serves critical infrastructure in the area including the subway system as well as trains and communication networks.
“We are pleased to provide state-of-the-art control and protection technologies to optimize the performance of this important substation and enhance power security for vital infrastructure needs and millions of people,” said Claudio Facchin, president of ABB’s Power Systems division.
