Scott Ziegenfus, manager of government and industry relations at Hubbell Lighting, was recently appointed Committee Secretary for the SSPC 135, BACnet® Standard Committee. Ziegenfus is the first BACnet committee officer from the lighting industry, demonstrating the importance of lighting’s role in the entire built environment and not simply HVAC.
BACnet is an American national standard, a European standard, a national standard in more than 30 countries, and an ISO global standard. The protocol is supported and maintained by ASHRAE Standing Standard Project Committee 135.
Since the beginning, standard lighting was secondary to HVAC for control by the BMS. Objects, BIBBs and device profiles were all HVAC based and lighting had to adapt. The capability and coverage of the LED, however, has changed the value of lighting to the building environment. To complement the emphasis on lighting the SSPC 135 BACnet committee has moved to provide specific Lighting Objects, BIBBs and Device Profiles, expanding the BACnet capability into the Networked Lighting world.
Ziegenfus will play a critical role in the BACnet committee’s efforts to enhance the data exchange within the BACnet standard for networked lighting systems.
