Osram to Close Pennsylvania Plant in 2016

DANVERS, Mass. — Due to a fundamentally changing market that is moving from a traditional lighting business towards one focused on energy-saving LED lighting products, OSRAM worldwide has been implementing steps to position themselves for future growth.

This strategy includes the following:

  • The realignment of the company through the carve-out of the lamps business
  • Commencement of innovation and technology initiatives with an emphasis on LED-based lighting.

However, declining market sales volume for traditional lighting products has impacted manufacturing locations, which need to reflect current and future product demands. As a result, OSRAM SYLVANIA has announced the company will discontinue operations at the Wellsboro, Pennsylvania manufacturing facility, effective September 2016.

Approximately 114 hourly and salaried employees will be impacted. The closure of the plant is part of OSRAM’s previously announced global realignment toward solid state lighting (SSL).

The decision to close the plants is a difficult but necessary step in order to focus resources on developing a comprehensive solid-state lighting portfolio that best meets the needs of the market and ensures future growth. The company is putting steps in place and remains committed to quality production and safe productivity during this transition process.
