AGA Recognizes Galvan Industries

HARRISBURG, N.C. — The American Galvanizers Association (AGA) has recently chosen two projects by Galvan Industries, Inc. of Harrisburg, N.C., as Case Studies that exemplify the beauty, durability and application flexibility of hot dip galvanizing for rust prevention.

The I-485 guardrail system in Charlotte, N.C. is one of the projects recently recognized by the AGA. The Interstate 485 project began in 1988, 27 years before the last 5.7-mile segment was completed on June 5, 2015. Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) was specified in the guardrail portion of the project for its maintenance free service life of more than 50 years. Galvan Industries provided the galvanizing services.

HDG was also specified for a recently re-constructed a “Beach Apparatus Cart” used in demonstrations at the Cape Lookout National Seashore, part of the National Park Service. Like the original carts, the reconstructed cart has a single axle and when fully loaded can weigh as much 2000 pounds. The hand-forged steel braces used to support the cart were hot-dip galvanized by Galvan Industries to provide historical accuracy and corrosion protection for decades to come.

Four other Galvan projects — BB&T Ballpark, Durham Bulls Ballpark, Metrolina Greenhouses and Charlotte-Douglas airport parking decks — have been chosen for Case Studies since 2011.

In addition to the six Galvan Case Studies now on the AGA web site, the company has been recognized 10 times by the AGA’s Hot-Dip Galvanizing Excellence Awards since 1997, including the Lifetime Achievement award in 2012. Information about these award-winning projects is also available on the AGA web site.

“We’re honored to have been selected so many times by our association to represent the benefits of hot-dip galvanizing to so many different industries,” said Galvan president Laurens Willard. “It is a testament to our people and their dedication to quality.”
